   Next to the Opera House is the equally flamboyant Pavilion Gardens, dotted with domed pavilions. The main building contains a tropical greenhouse, a nostalgic cafe and the tourist office. Beware of getting lost in the unlit gardens after dark.

   For a fragrant perspective of the castle, head for the Mill Garden, an explosion of flowers and plants within splashing distance of the weir that powered the castle mill.

   Knot Garden

   The wealthy, retired Shakespeare bought a fine home at New Place on the corner of Chapel St and Chapel Lane. He died there in April 1616 and the house was demolished in 1759. An attractive Elizabethan knot garden now occupies part of the grounds.

4. Birmingham Botanical Gardens & Glasshouses

   • Birmingham, England

   In Edgbaston, these are the Midlands' answer to Kew, with grand Victorian glasshouses full of flowers, cacti, palms and a collection of bonsai. Take bus 10, 22 or 23.
