    West of the central Market Sq, St Peter's Church – collect the key from the nearby Ibis Hotel – is a marvellous Norman edifice built in 1150 and adorned with ancient carvings.

  3. Church of the Holy Sepulchre

    North of the centre, beyond the eyesore bus station, Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the few surviving round churches in the country, founded when the first Earl of Northampton returned from the Crusades in 1100.

    Constructed after the 1675 fire, All Saints' Church owes an obvious debt to the churches built by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London, with an ornate barrel-vaulted ceiling and dark-wood organ and reredos.
