There's something for everyone at the boldly-named Edgbaston Palace, a 150-year-old place where pictures of Formula 1 cars sit next to antique wood panelling, marble fireplaces and swag curtains; where '70s-esque cream leather does battle with soulless mass-produced dining room furniture.

It all sounds disastrous but somehow this hotel manages to get away with it - well all except those racing cars haphazardly placed around reception. The hotel is centered round a generous courtyard, with the quieter rooms facing inwards. In the main building, the wood panelling, overstuffed armchairs, and tasselled standard lamps of the public rooms reflect the style of the spacious bedrooms - all giant beds, high ceilings, claw-foot baths and heavy drapes. In the newer wing the rooms are stylish and contemporary with simple, neutral colours, cream leathers and brand new bathrooms. There's plenty of parking, a large garden and a dismal restaurant but if you need a base in Birmingham you could do a lot worse.
