    Walkers can hike from north Bishops Castle along the Shropshire Way (www.shropshirewalking.co.uk), which joins up with the long-distance Offa's Dyke Path and Kerry Ridgeway to the west. The northern sections of the Shropshire Way climb to the high country of the Stiperstones and the Long Mynd near Church Stretton. The tourist office sells a series of Walking for Pleasure pamphlets covering local walks.

  10. Long Mynd

    Church Stretton clings to the steeply sloping sides of the Long Mynd, Shropshire's most famous hill, which rises to 517m. Dubbed 'Little Switzerland' by the Victorians, this desolate but dramatic bluff is girdled by walking trails that offer soaring views over the surrounding countryside. Most people start walking from the National Trust car park at the end of the Carding Mill Valley, half a mile west of Shrewsbury Rd – a small tearoom provides refreshments. To escape the summer weekend crowds, head east across the A49 and climb the 459m summit of Caer Caradoc.

    Hires out canoes and kayaks, and also organises multiday kayaking trips, white-water trips, caving and climbing. Strong currents make the river dangerous for swimming.

    Enjoy Shrewsbury from the water on board the Sabrina, which cruises the River Severn. Trips leave roughly hourly between 11am and 4pm (March to October) from Victoria Quay near the Welsh Bridge. Ghost cruises every Thursday evening.
