Three miles northeast of Winchcombe lie the meagre ruins of this 13th-century Cistercian abbey, once one of England’s main pilgrimage centres, due to a long-running medieval scam. The abbey was said to possess a vial of Christ’s blood, which turned out to be merely coloured water; before the deception came to light, thousands of pilgrims contributed to the abbey’s wealth. Free audioguides lead you around.
