St Mary’s Church information

Lonely Planet review

The village centres on a fine, Perpendicular wool church, its pointy steeply fingering the sky, surrounded by tabletop tombs and exactly 99 clipped yew trees that resemble giant lollipops. Legend has it that if the 100th yew tree were allowed to grow, the devil would appear and shrivel it. They planted it anyway, to celebrate the millennium and – lo and behold! – one of the trees toppled several years later, making the number an odd 99 again. The work of the Horned One, perhaps?
