St Mary's Church
The village centres on a fine, Perpendicular wool church surrounded by tabletop tombs and 99 clipped yew trees. Legend has it that if the hundredth yew tree were allowed to grow, the devil would appear and shrivel it. They planted it anyway – to celebrate the millennium – but there's been no sign of the Wicked One.

Painswick Rococo Garden
Just a mile north of town, the ostentatious Painswick Rococo Garden is the area's biggest attraction. These flamboyant pleasure gardens were designed by Benjamin Hyett in the 1740s and have now been restored to their former glory. Winding paths soften the otherwise strict geometrical precision, bringing visitors around the central vegetable garden to the many Gothic follies dotted in the grounds. There's also a children's nature trail and maze.

Coopers Hill
If you're visiting in late May, enquire about the cheese-rolling competition held on nearby Cooper's Hill in Cranham. A 200-year-old tradition sees locals running, tumbling and sliding down a local hill in pursuit of a seven-pound block of Double Gloucester cheese. For the truly committed, there is also an uphill competition.
