French restaurants in Southwest England

  1. A

    Print Room

This charismatic brasserie exudes Parisian chic, from the black and white tiled floors to the burnished wooden booths. Gallic-influenced dishes include twice-baked Gruyere soufflé and a deeply decadent rich chocolate mousse. Or try that most excellent French tradition: the plat du jour, including wine, for only £8.

  2. No 6

Much of the fish at this cosmopolitan bistro comes straight off a Weymouth trawler. The French chef specialises in giving local produce a Gallic makeover – look out for lamb’s kidney on brioche, and crab baked Creole-style.

    Harris' Restaurant

Penzance's original fine-dining restaurant is still going strong after 30-odd years. Times have moved on but the menu at Harris' is still mostly classic French, serving up local game and fish dishes in the scarlet-tinted. napkin-laced dining room.

    Parisien

Parisien Oh la la - a little soupçon of Paris in the heart of Bath. It's all authentically Gallic - tables on the terrace, moules frites on the menu and the crispiest frites this side of the English Channel.

    Glassboat

You couldn't ask for a more romantic place for dinner than this double-decked river barge, with its candlelit tables and watery views. The food is solid rather than spectacular, revolving around French standards such as fish soup, rabbit hotpot and tarragon chicken with pommes dauphinoises.

    Guildhall Tavern

More Provence than Poole, the food at this brasserie is Gallic gourmet charm at its best: unpretentious and first class. Flavour sensations include halibut with Chablis hollandaise, and duck with Grand Marnier. Exquisite aromas fill the dining room, along with the quiet murmur of people enjoying very good food.
