Countless buses cover the 20-minute trip to Bournemouth. National Express runs hourly to London (£17.60, three hours). Train connections are as for Bournemouth, just 13 minutes closer to London Waterloo (£36.10).

You can hire bikes from Cycle Paths (680123; www.cycle-paths.co.uk; Dolphin Shopping Centre) for around £15 per day.

Sandbanks Ferry (01929-450203; www.sandbanksferry.co.uk; pedestrian/car 90p/£2.80) shuttles across to Studland every 20 minutes. This is a short cut from Poole to Swanage, Wareham and the west Dorset coast, but summer queues can be horrendous.

Bus 152 goes from Poole to Sandbanks (15 minutes, hourly).
