Despite the name, this altogether fabulous, vaguely decadent guesthouse is far from impoverished. Opulent rooms drip with chandeliers and gold brocades; beds draped in fine cottons range from French sleigh to four-poster.
The décor's not that remarkable (dark pine and photo placemats) but the choices are: 16 different shampoos and breakfasts that include cinnamon toast with caramelised apple, veggie sausages and croissants stuffed with cheese and ham.
A subtle barn conversion with airy rooms, breakfasts full of farmers market produce, riverside paddocks and three cute alpacas to befriend. It's 2 miles north of Dorchester.
Colours from a Georgian palette grace the walls of this elegant 18th-century townhouse. Plush bedrooms feature wicker furniture, cast-iron bedsteads and dainty cushions, while the conservatory is home to a superb breakfast spread.
Downstairs this hotel is all 18th-century charm. A huge heraldic crest hangs over reception and the ceiling is lined with elaborate plasterwork. Bedrooms are more modern, featuring sleek armchairs and ultra-trendy sinks.
