Warren House Inn
Plonked amid miles of open moor, this former tin miners' haunt exudes the kind of hospitality you only get in a pub in the middle of nowhere. A Dartmoor institution, its stone floors, trestle tables and hearty food (served noon–8.30pm) are warmed by a fire that's reputedly been crackling since 1845. Between November and March the pub closes at 5pm on Monday and Tuesday. It's on the B3212, 2 miles northeast of Postbridge.

Okehampton Castle
Clinging to a wooded spur, the crumbling Norman motte and ruined keep of what was once Devon's largest castle allow for some picturesque rampart clambering.

Lydford Gorge
The 1½-mile rugged riverside hikes here snake past a series of bubbling whirlpools (including the fearsome 'Devil's Cauldron') to the thundering, 30m-high White Lady waterfall. Lydford is 9 miles southwest of Okehampton.

Brimpts Farm
They've been serving cream teas here since 1913, and its still one of the best places to tuck in on the moor. Expect freshly baked scones, homemade jams and utterly gooey clotted cream. It's signed off the B3357, Two Bridges–Dartmeet road.
