  1. A

    Sloop Inn

Old Speckled Hen, Doom Bar and Bass ales make this beam-ceilinged boozer a favourite with St Ives' old boys. Settle into a booth seat for the night, or bag a spot on one of the wharfside tables.

  2. B

    Guildhall

Hosts music and theatre, especially during the St Ives September Festival.

  3. C

    Old Ale House

The pick of Truro's pubs, and a welcome change if you're getting sick of minimalist décor and designer cocktails. Here it's all burnished wood and beer mats; a selection of daily ales are chalked up behind the bar, and there's often a jazz troupe at weekends.

  4. D

    Turk's Head

Penzance isn't short of a boozer or two, but the old Turk's Head - purportedly the town's oldest pub - is a personal favourite. Tobacco-stained walls, patchy carpets and a battered bar just add to the atmosphere of a well-used (and much-loved) watering hole.

  5. E

    Isobar

St Ives's sole club, split into two levels; chrome-edge chill-out bar on the ground floor, hot-and-heavy dance floor upstairs. Funk, house, techno and cheesy disco played throughout the week.

    Quayside

Just along the quay from the Chain Locker, this busy boozer is the place for a sunset pint, with picnic tables beside the harbour and a twin-floored pub selling German lager and local beers.

  7. G

    Hub

After-dark action is thin on the ground in St Ives; thankfully this funky open-plan café-bar fills the void, with DJs and live music by night, and lattes and hot chocolate by day.

  8. H

    Poly

The old Falmouth Arts Centre has had a recent revamp as an arthouse cinema, and shows all the brilliant European films and low-budget Brit flicks you never get to see down the Odeon.

  9. I

    Central

As its name suggests, this rowdy pre-club pub is right in the heart of town, and the outside patio is always overflowing on warm summer nights.

  10. J

    Princess Pavilion

The town's main venue for live events, with gigs, theatre and tribute bands aplenty, and the annual Cornwall Film Festival (www.cornwallfilmfestival.com) every November.

  12. K

    Jam

Impossibly funky music emporium-cum-cappuccino bar, with a just-so selection of vinyl and CDs, great coffee and leather sofas to lounge around on. Nice

  13. L

    Koola

Underneath Chy, Koola is the choice for connoisseur clubbers, with regular house, latin and drum and bass nights, and a regular slot for local boys Jelly Jazz.

  14. M

    L2

Truro's biggest nightclub, with five themed nights including the popular Tranz@ction club night on Friday. Things get notoriously rowdy at kicking-out time.

  15. Kasbah

Shades of Morocco hang heavy over this perennially popular wine bar, which is always stuffed with 30-something boozers and runs a late-licence on weekends.

  16. Heron

Two miles from the city along the river estuary, this creekside pub serves good beer and excellent grub, with outside benches where you sup your pint.

  17. N

    Blue South

Sister venue to the Blue Bar on Porthtowan, this beachy bar offers a similarly chilled vibe, with deep sofas, draft beers and a menu of munchie mains.

  18. O

    Chain Locker

    Shiver-me-timbers - a classic old sea-dog of a pub, with the all-important low ceilings, heart-stopping ales and hugger-mugger atmosphere.

  19. P

    Acorn Arts Centre

An excellent independent arts centre, with regular programs of film, theatre and live music.

This cavernous Aussie-styled bar is popular for big-screen sports and cocktail nights, plus party, pop and house DJs at weekends.

  21. R

    Sailor's Arms

Notoriously low-rent pub-club where the main emphasis is on rock-bottom booze. Shy and retiring types should steer clear.
