Lonely Planet review
Shabby chic pretty much sums up this venerable hotel, which stands in a smart terrace of Georgian townhouses in the heart of Clifton. It could certainly do with a spring-clean and a spruce-up, but it's pretty good value and fantastically convenient for exploring the Clifton attractions.
Given the imposing Georgian exterior, you could be forgiven for thinking you're in for an olde-worlde treat at the Rodney, but sadly the reality doesn't quite live up to the image. A couple of the rooms are suitably grand, with smart furniture, tasteful pastel fabrics, and views across the lovely walled garden, but most tend towards the scruffy side, characterised by battered armchairs and faded wallpaper. The pick of the bedrooms are on the first floor; avoid the shoebox-sized attic rooms if you can, which can get uncomfortably stuffy in summer. On the upside, the hotel only has 31 rooms, so staff can devote that little bit more time to you, and the bistros and bars of beautiful Clifton are on your doorstep. Parking outside the hotel incurs a steep £5.00 fee per night, but there's free onstreet parking nearby if you can find a space.
