Beautifully situated on a leafy square near the main university campus, this hip hotel brings a touch of baroque imagination to a traditional Georgian townhouse. Despite the elegant exterior, inside this is every inch the modern designer hotel, mixing traditional architecture with quirky furnishings and off-kilter colour schemes.

The Berkeley Square is the flagship property of the Clifton Hotels group, which owns four other hotels around the city. Puce and purple sofas, gilt mirrors and weirdly-painted gazelle heads are dotted around the ice-white lounge; while the bedrooms aren't quite as whacky, they're still luxurious and beautifully appointed, with facilities including widescreen TVs, DVD players and wi-fi. The bevy of extras includes fresh fruit, handmade biscuits and a complimentary decanter of sherry. Ask for one of the rooms overlooking the square for the nicest views, and go for one on the upper floors if you're after some peace and quiet. Guests also have access to The Square, part private member's club, part fine-dining restaurant and part groovy lounge-bar, where the line-up of regular events includes a poker night on Thursday and resident DJs at weekends.
