The Street View function of Google Maps has famously caught everything on camera from houses on fire to medieval-style sword fighting. It can even let you take a virtual stroll down a real Memory Lane.

But now it’s even more of a boon to armchair travellers: Google has announced the winners of its ‘Best Streets UK‘ Street View Awards, picked by the public from streets nominated across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in three categories. Here are the winners:

  • Best Foodie Street: Stockbridge High Street, Hampshire
  • Best Fashion Street: Milsom Street, Bath
  • Most Picturesque Street: The Shambles, York

See pictures of the winning streets and some of the runners-up here. If you’re determined to go down those roads yourself, don’t forget to pack our Great Britain and Ireland guides.

What are the award-worthy streets in your home town that deserve a mention?

In Melbourne, I'd nominate Brunswick St, Fitzroy for a Best Streets award: it's packed with cafes, bars and restaurants of every style and cuisine, along with local-label fashion boutiques, alternative book and record stores, vintage op shops, gourmet food retailers and live-music venues. You could easily spend an entire day on this one street.

In Vienna, Spittelberggasse is the most stunning street! There are great places to eat and shop. At the festive times of year, the markets are lovely! xx
