Vegan restaurants in England

  1. A

    Route Master

This excellent vegan restaurant is housed in a 1960s London Routemaster bus, which, while a quite a draw, seems incidental compared to its tasty and imaginative cooking.

  2. B

    El Piano

With a menu that is 100% vegan, nut-free and gluten-free, this colourful, Hispanic-style spot is a vegetarian haven. There's a lovely cafe downstairs and three themed rooms upstairs. The menu offers dishes such as falafel, onion bhaji, corn fritters and mushroom-and-basil salad, either in tapas-sized portions or as mixed platters. There's also a takeaway counter.

  3. C

    Wai Kika Moo Kau

Say its daft name fast and you'll get a clue to the ethos of this primarily veggie-vegan café. It spills onto the pedestrian street outside so you can sip your soyachino or tuck into meat-free specials as the shoppers pass by.

    Café Kino

Run by all-vegan owners, this co-operative café is impressive - the food's organic and local, the coffee's ethical, and there's even an alternative to corporate coke. Veggie lasagnes, leek and bacon pie and portabella mushrooms characterise the menu.

    Eighth Day

New and most definitely improved after a major cleanup, this environment-friendly hang out is a favourite with students and sells everything to make you feel good about your place in the world, from Fairtrade teas to homeopathic remedies. The vegetarian- and vegan-friendly menu is substantial.
