Oxford Castle Unlocked information
It's hardly England's most imposing fortress, but Oxford Castle dates back to 1071. Access is by theatrical 40-minute tours, departing every 20 minutes, led by costumed guides. Tours include St George's Tower, offering excellent city views; the 11th-century crypt of St George's Chapel, possibly Oxford's first formal teaching venue; Victorian prison cells; and the 18th-century Debtors' Tower, where you'll learn about the inmates' grisly lives, daring escapes and cruel punishments. You can also clamber up the original medieval motte.
