Lonely Planet review

Stuck in a glorious time warp, the Britannia has decor so over the top it really has to be seen to be believed. A relic from times gone by, this place oozes old-world character and style, and although popular with the blue-rinse brigade it's also slap bang in the centre of town.

Dark, dramatic and dripping with gold, the incredible royal-blue foyer has gold-encrusted wallpaper, massive golden chandeliers and elaborate gilded columns flanking a monumental central staircase. The lounge, the landings and the corridors get equal treatment with imposing gold-leaf wallpapers, hefty swag curtains and heavy, traditional furniture. The rooms are more restrained in style, but still full-on chintz, with potent floral wallpapers, matching floral bedspreads and curtains, tasselled hanging lampshades and big, frumpy armchairs. Some of the cheapest interior rooms have no window so check when booking if you'd like something other than lurid artificial light. The whole hotel really is an experience in itself, but if you need some relief from the oppressive interior design, the best the city has to offer in terms of shopping, entertainment and culture is right on the doorstep.
