Lonely Planet review

Dripping with heavy swag curtains, gilt-encrusted fittings and dark sultry colours, the Willow Bank is an ambitious place set in the student area of Fallowfields in South Manchester. Although a bit of a hike from town, there's easy access to the city centre and the rooms are excellent value.

Chequer-board chairs, replica Roman statues and painted plaster cornices make a strong statement in the public areas of the Willow Bank, a hotel that looks like it's been caught in a fight between warring interior designers. At times swamped by overpowering decor and yet strangely devoid of a single defining style, you'll find your buffet breakfast in a room festooned with swag curtains held back by tasseled, golden cords, but you'll be sitting at cheap modern tables in leather tub chairs. If you can deal with the contrast you'll be rewarded with a choice of excellent rooms in more consistent conditions. Some are classically warm and rich, decked out in deep reds and sunshine yellows, while others are a haven of sleek modern minimalism, in calming cream and deep purple, with silky throws, contemporary furniture and not a ruffle in sight.
