Lonely Planet review
Until 1986, this lovely Georgian house was the Venezuelan consulate; it has since been converted into a decent hostel that serves up free tea, coffee and toast at all times. There's also a TV lounge, a games room and a self-catering kitchen.
There isn't a hotel in the world that doesn't advertise itself as 'friendly', but saying and doing are two very different things. The two owners of the Embassie, a father-and-son pair both called Kevin, are the real deal, and their greatest accomplishment is maintaining a welcoming environment that is an absolute prerequisite of a great hostel. Fluid, easygoing and accommodating, the two Kevins will go to great lengths to make sure everything is ok. Forgot your towels? You can have some for free. Prefer a same-sex dorm? They'll make it happen if they can. Have some valuables and are worried because there aren't any lockers? No problems, they'll stick them in the safe. Want to hear Kevin Jr's latest song? Out comes the guitar. The Embassie's secret is not that their dorms or facilities are any swankier than anywhere else, but that the attitude is better.
