Lonely Planet review for Almshouse

Fancy imaginative and satisfying snacks served in a genuine 17th-century house right on Palace Green? It's a shame about the interior, which has been restored to look like any old museum canteen. All the artwork on the walls is for sale.

    mackemtraveller recommends this,

On the face of it, this is a self-service cafe with an unremarkable interior. Then again, who judges something by the face alone? Well, everyone, admittedly, but nevertheless this is a nice little cafe. The food is standard cafe fare, though perhaps a little healthier and varied than usual. Plenty of soups, sandwiches and salads, a fairly wide range of hot dishes, lots of vegetarian options, and enough desserts and pastries to wipe out all the healthiness of your main course. I've eaten here half a dozen times and every dish has been good.

In terms of atmosphere, there's a few works of art on the walls, plenty of local information and newspapers available to read, and it always feels quite relaxing no matter how busy it gets (and it can really fill up fast around meal times).

The thing that really sets this cafe apart, however, are the exterior - a breathtakingly beautiful 15th century building constructed from delicious, honey-coloured stone - and the location, right on Palace Green with Durham Cathedral on your left and Durham Castle on your right, which is certainly one of the finest locations in the north of England.

So, perfectly decent food, an interior that could be infinitely nicer, and perfectly decent staff, but the exterior and location make it a brilliant place to eat. I definitely recommend.
