The centrepiece of this museum, which explores the evolution of money and the history of the venerable Bank of England (founded in 1694 by a Scotsman), is a reconstruction of architect John Soane’s original Bank Stock Office, complete with original mahogany counters. A series of rooms leading off the office are packed with exhibits ranging from silverware and coins to banknotes and a hefty 13kg gold bar you can lift up.
