Lonely Planet review for Camden Market

Although this market remains a top attraction, its heyday is a distant memory. Commercial tat has long taken over from the truly inventive, although you might find some good retro pieces. The place is busiest at weekends, especially Sunday, when the crowds elbow each other all the way north from Camden Town tube station to Chalk Farm Rd. It’s composed of several separate markets, which tend to merge.

Top thing to do in London

Not sure why this is #59... And maybe Camden has changed BUT its still a great place to go to spend a day and evening! It's big - you can spend all day there, and there are still many many independent shops and stalls, flea markets with antiques etc. Loads of food courts with loads of international food, and cheap too! Cocktail bars, barges. I love it, and always go here when in London. So far not seen anywhere comparable in other world cities....

Still some good finds to be found.

Camden was THE centre of alternative culture in London, but then Starbucks and GAP moved in. Yes what the F*** does GAP have to do with alternative culture....nothing. Still some of the markets do try to live on like nothings changed and the revamp of the Vaults market has improved the surrounds somewhat. Over the years Camden Market has cashed in on its popularity and what was once a haven for bargins in now a place to burn hard earned cash. Sunday is the most popular day and not without good reason, it is when all of the markets are open. But Camden is not just a place for shopping. Of and evening this is a great location for eating and drinking and if you love alternative/metal/indie music partying.
