A jewel of the local scene, this incredibly smart restaurant, whose pedigree stretches back to 1896, has four elegant, discreet and spacious wood-panelled rooms in which to savour the riches of the sea, cooked simply and exquisitely. The fish pie (£11.75) is justifiably legendary, though the Cornish fish stew is just as good. Three-course weekday lunch is £24.75.

    What a great restaurant, you can't go wrong with this choice for a real treat. The service is friendly and very courteous, the food is excellent and unpretentious. The Fish Pie is a must but everything on the menu is delicious. There is a doorman to welcome you and its in the heart of the theatreland so great for a pre or post show dinner. Its cosy for couples but equally good for groups and you may even spot some celebrities. I am giving it five stars all round
