Lonely Planet review for Marine Ices

As its name suggests, this Chalk Farm institution started out as an ice-cream parlour (in fact, a Sicilian gelateria ) but these days it does some savoury dishes as well, including pizzas and hearty pasta dishes. Be sure to try some of the excellent ice cream, which has its own menu – look for the long line out on the street on summer weekends!

    fantastic italian food in the heart of north london

    The Mansi family has been running a restaurant on the site of Marine Ices for nearly 80 years; it is a local institution and with one visit you will know why.
    The restaurant is an unassuming, family-run, family-friendly place - with the feel of a relaxed trattoria rather than ristorante. The welcome and service are warm and the staff are happy to show you around the menus - a main menu, a pizza menu and an ice cream menu. Whatever you choose, you cannot go wrong; flavours are simple and strong.
    From the main menu you can choose from a range of chicken, meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, or select your favourite of 12 sauces to go with your preferred choice of 5 types of pasta.
    The pizza menu offers a range of both classic pizzas and house specialities; all are large and generously topped. My personal favourite is the Sul Divano; tomato, mozzarella, grilled aubergine, asparagus and basil.
    But make sure you leave room for an ice cream! The ice cream menu runs to two full pages, with a huge selection of gelati and sorbetti. Then come the bombe, cassate and coppe, ranging from the familiar Peach Melba to Marine Ices own Vesuvius - vanilla, chocolate and coffee ice-cream with crushed meringue, cherries and sponge soaked in Marsala wine with a double portion of cream. All home made and absolutely sensational.
    Loosen your belts, relax, and enjoy a taste of Italy!
