Lonely Planet review for New Tayyab

This buzzing (OK, crowded) Punjabi restaurant is in another league to its Brick Lane equivalents. Seekh kebabs, masala fish and other starters served on sizzling hot plates are delicious, as are accompaniments such as dhal, naan and raita. But with Tayyabs now appearing regularly in guidebooks and the huge London Royal Hospital round the corner, you should expect to wait for a table.

    Disappointing

    pennylouise does not recommend this,

Disappointing. I’m a very big fan of the Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine and was very excited when a friend told me she managed to book a table at Tayyabs (3 weeks in advance!). With high expectations I entered Tayyabs and was overwhelmed by masses of people queuing and trying to get the attention of the waiter. After around 20 minutes a waiter seated us in the downstairs area, which is very dark and less appealing than upstairs. You can find a very young and fashionable crowd at Tayyabs and you can bring your own booze. But we felt rushed during dinner, the meat was chewy and despite not ordering alcoholic drinks, we had quite a high bill at the end. I’m not coming back despite the hype around Tayyabs, or maybe BECAUSE of all the hype around it, the food does not fulfil the expectations.

I found the food fatty, and overcooked, and the staff unhelp

Book a table for tonight. Now. It's amazing.

    ryanoscerous recommends this,

There are just no words which will do Tayyab's justice.

Book ahead. It gets really busy on any night of the week, with lines going out into the street even in the cold London winter. Booking may not mean you get seated at the time you book, but you will be ahead of much of the rest of the line.

BYO some Cobra. Order a range of food among your group. None will be disappointed. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of food you are served.

Brick Lane is fun. Tayyab's is close by and a massive step up. If I could go there right now, I would.

I will fight you for the last lamb chop.

    andy_murdock recommends this,

I'm quite serious - those lamb chops have mysterious powers of deliciousness. They come sizzling on a platter, a scattered array of Flintstonian protruding bones on a pterodactyl's nest of onions. This is not an experience for vegetarians, but for any meat-lover it's one of London's top delights.

Don't miss the milkshakey mango lassis, or, if you must have beer, don't forget to BYO.

    Stick it on my tayyab...

    dry_ice recommends this,

Ah, good. An Asian eatery that is somewhere between fancy Michelin starred fusion and suspicious takeaway, and also a bit different from your typical Indian.
    Mainly because it's Pakistani-influenced.
4 of us arrived there 6:30 or so on a weekday and the queue was long, and growing longer... a bit like that computer game 'Snake', but in a busy restaurant. But, joy of joys, you can Bring Your Own Booze, so we cracked open a can in the line and savoured the smells and atmosphere. When we finally got a table - and it wasn't that long a wait - we were squeezed in amongst others. Don't expect a spacious table in the window, it's not that kinda place.
I ordered a mixed platter, which had shish kebabs and tandoori chicken and rice etc, various flavours and all very delicious.
And reasonably priced as well, we spent about £11 each i think. (and 4xlagers from the off-licence, £5!).
Overall, well worth a visit. I'm not sure you can book, so expect to queue. Just bring some tinnies.
