More relaxed than its Old Compton St cousin, this gay-friendly bar-grill is pleasant, although pricey for the fare it serves. Eye-candy waiters may be little else than that, but it's a nice spot to watch the world go by. The menu ranges from simple sandwiches to the more standard brasserie fare of well-realised salads and grills.

This cafe is always buzzing - a bit too much so when the owner's kids start acting up - still, it's got an inexplicably magnetic power. The food can be hit and miss (veggie sausages and mash hit, cooked brekkies generally miss), the smoothies are invigorating, and the staff are friendly to locals and polite to strangers.

Blue Kangaroo
This very family-oriented restaurant allows you to enjoy a meal while watching, via CCTV, your under-eights run wild in the downstairs playroom (from around £3 to £5 ). Adult nerves are soothed with grilled goat's cheese, Thai king prawns and mushroom tagliatelle. The children's menu has homemade fish fingers, nuggets and pizza. There are different activities scheduled each day.

Still our favourite place for something to wake up to, especially after a tough Saturday night on the tiles, this bright and flowery oasis in Islington's Camden Passage follows in the footsteps of the Breakfast Club Soho). But, despite the name, breakfast (from around £3 to £7 ) is not the only game here and they also do sandwiches, salads and decent pies (from £8 ).

Twelfth House
This lovely Notting Hill coffee house has a kooky astrological edge. The bar is dominated by an amazing astrological clock and the owner, Priscilla, is an astrologer who comes in three times a week (phone to find out when) and works out your chart or reads your 'tarot card of the day' on request (for an around £5 charge). If she's not in, the waitress can provide you with a card detailing the characteristics of your star sign.
