Lonely Planet review for Prospect of Whitby

Once known as the Devil’s Tavern, the Whitby’s said to date from 1520, making it the oldest riverside pub in London. It’s firmly on the tourist trail now, but there’s a smallish terrace to the front and the side overlooking the Thames, a decent restaurant upstairs and open fires in winter. Check out the wonderful pewter bar – Samuel Pepys once sidled up to it to sup.

Love it, even with the silly noose

It's hard not to love the Prospect of Whitby, even with the highly arguable claims to being the oldest pub in London and the cheesy pseudo-history that gets played up around the pub (including a noose that dangles over the Thames implying a link to the notorious Execution Dock, which was actually some ways to the west of this spot). Locals mostly think that the Prospect is a bit too touristy - from experience, very few tourists ever make it to Wapping, and if they do, they're probably the type of tourist you'd enjoy having a pint and chat with.
