Lonely Planet review for Brockwell Park Lido

A beautifully designed 1930s lido, Brockwell is one of London’s best, as witnessed by the multitudes that descend in the summer months.

    South London's Secret Oasis

    dansolo recommends this,

Tucked away in leafy Herne Hill, Brixton's rather more sedate neighbour (occasionally referred to as "Brixton Lite"), the surprisingly rambling fields of Brockwell Park plays host to one of London's finest lidos.

Sensitive renovation work has recently been carried out on this gorgeous 1930's building, and a significant regeneration project, both in the park and local area, has once again brought the discerning crowds back to this excellent public outdoor swimming pool.

The pool is generally open between May and September and beware, is not heated, so not for the feint-hearted. Also open in the middle of December for the breaking of the ice in the annual Winter Swim, patrons can now warm themselves up with a coffee at the effortlessly hip Lido Cafe, or cool themselves down with a cold beer there, should the English sun be smiling in the summer months...

Midweek from around mid-June to the middle of July (outside of the school holidays) is by far the best time to visit the lido, enabling you to avoid the crowds, but also engage in a singular South London experience. If you do decide to go during the school holidays be sure to arrive early in order to not have to join the snaking queues that start from early in the morning.

The Prince Regent public house, opposite the Lido on Dulwich Rd, is an excellent local and a perfect place to end the day bathed in the evening sun with a number of fine English ales on tap.
