This popular hotel complex 13km (8mi) outside the city centre is closer to a designer resort than to a traditional motorway hotel. It's recently scooped a bevy of national awards and is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the best all-round bases near Bristol.
The Aztec is a far cry from a standard-issue chain; the designers have made every effort to liven up the boxy modern architecture with characterful touches such as reclaimed timber, Cotswold stone and modern art. There's a choice of rooms ranging from 'contemporary' to 'executive', but for maximum space ask for one of the lakeside rooms, with patio doors which open onto the private garden. The decor is fresh and up-to-date, if a little functional in places, but the facilities can't be faulted: super power showers, Keiji bath products and big beds come as standard. The executive rooms also boast a guest fridge and separate study area. Family rooms and four-poster suites are available if you're happy to splash the cash, and there's a huge leisure complex with a state-of-the-art gym, spa and Olympic-sized swimming pool.
