The grande dame of Cambridge hotels, this huge Victorian mansion hunkers down beside bustling Parker's Piece green as though fondly overseeing his great-great-grandchildren's cricket skills. Its public spaces ooze gentleman's-club atmosphere, its 120 rooms comfort and elegance.

Dating back to 1834, the University Arms has revelled in its reputation as Cambridge's top hotel for a trifling 170 years. And though the competition is much stiffer these days, its mixture of Victorian pomp, plum central position, first-class service and park views are hard to beat. That said, if you prefer your comforts contemporary, you're better off elsewhere. While a modern annex houses the chic restaurant and a significant facelift is (perhaps wisely) planned for the next few years, the hotel has relied upon its dusty time-warp charms for a shade too long. But if creaky 1920s cage lifts, stained glass and tartan carpets, leather armchairs and filigree ironwork satisfy your idea of class, this could be the hotel for you. Note that this is one of relatively few central hotels with parking, although it charges for the privilege.
