GUEST POST by Radha Vijay. Keswick is a quaint market town in the Lake District, Cumbria in the UK. Its name originates from an Old English term Cese wic meaning ‘farm where cheese is made’. The origin of the market town is said to date back to 1276 when Edward I granted a charter to hold a market and the practice continues till today, well over 700 years later.

Lady in the Eden Valley
Blog: A Lady in London - 18 July 2011
Last week I wrote about a hidden gem in London. But London isn’t the only place in Britain with great new places to discover. On Wednesday I traveled by train up to northern England to a place called the Eden Valley in Cumbria. Situated in a narrow stretch of land that runs between the Lake [...]

Lady in the Lake District
Blog: A Lady in London - 9 August 2010
The Lake District is best known for hiking. Trails wind up mountains, though sheep-filled pastures, and along mirrored lakes. Every village in Cumbria from bustling Keswick to tiny Grasmere has at least one outdoor goods shop that caters to the mountaineers that flood the Lake District every summer. I knew all of this when I [...]

Lady in Windermere
Blog: A Lady in London - 5 August 2010
When the TransPennine Express pulls into Windermere train station the first thing the uninitiated notice is that, despite being in the Lake District, there is no lake. A mile up the hill from the lake of the same name, Windermere is a hill town if the Lake District has one. But it’s no matter. The [...]

a little waterfall…quaint charms of england
Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 9 September 2009
The Lake District in England is the perfect place for “just a bit of a wander” as all of the hostel owners and locals have called it. This quaint phrase is just one more example of the differences between the US and England…and I have to say, framing a walk with the idea of “having [...]

a little green…playing in sheep pastures
Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 7 September 2009
The green sheep pastures of the Lake District in England were so stunning that they actually caused me to go into spontaneous dances of joy. I mean, if you know that you’re completely and truly alone with only a sheep as witness is there really anything else you could do? I reckon not. I made a [...]

a little water…cruising the lake district
Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 6 September 2009
The sparkling lakes glistened with the setting sun as my train sped through the Lake District National Park in England; I couldn’t help but admire the spectacularly green rolling hills dotted with small white sheep that were in turn spotted with a dot of blue or red color to mark their owner. After the hustle and [...]
