Bus & tram

Bus

The most useful bus is the 555/556, which stops at Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick (10 to 12 daily). There are two daily return buses from Kendal to Coniston (bus 505; 1¼ hours) via Windermere, Hawkshead and Ambleside. Bus X35 travels along the coast to Grange, Newby Bridge, Ulverston and Barrow (hourly Monday to Saturday, three times on Sunday).

Train

Kendal station is on the branch line to Windermere (15 minutes) from Oxenholme, 2 miles south of town, with hourly trains from Carlisle (£14.80, one hour) and London Euston (£107, four hours).
