Local transport


There are taxi stands on the plaza, Metrocentro mall and on 10a Av Sur, adjacent to the main bus terminal. If you hail one on the street, be sure to see that the license plate starts with the letter 'A, ' denoting an official taxi. Agree on the rate beforehand; rides in town cost around US$4.

Bus & tram


Most buses leave from the main bus terminal (10a Av Sur at 15a Calle Pte), is socked in on all sides by market stalls; it takes buses at least 15 minutes just to get through the congestion. A few buses leave from outlying stops, mostly around El Triángulo, a busy triangular intersection a block west of the terminal.

Bus 248 to Parque Nacional Los Volcánes leaves from La Vencedora bus terminal (2440 8453), a block west of Parque Colón. Remember that, in order to make the 11am guided hikes, you must catch the bus from Santa Ana by 8:30am.

Buses from Santa Ana travel to the following destinations:

Ahuachapán Bus 210 (US$0.44, 1¼ hours, every 10 minutes from 4am to 8:20pm). This passes Casa Blanca, but not Tazumal; for Tazumal, take a Chalchuapa bus.

Anguiatú (Guatemalan border) Take bus to Metapán and transfer (US$1.10).

Chalchuapa/Ruínas de Tazumal Bus 218 (US$0.30, 30 minutes, every 10 minutes from 6:15am to 7:15pm), departs from southwest corner of El Triángulo.

Juayúa Bus 238 (US$0.75, one hour, 6:40am, 9:30am, 12:20pm, 4:20pm, 5:30pm and 6:10pm).

Lago de Coatepeque Bus 220/242 (US$0.40, 1¼ hours, every 30 minutes from 6am to 5:25pm).

Las Chinamas (Guatemalan border) Take any Ahuachapán bus and transfer.

Los Naranjos Take any bus 216 (not bus 209) toward Sonsonate (US$0.50, 45 minutes).

Metapán Bus 235 (US$0.85, 1¼ hours, every 20 minutes from 5am to 5:30pm), catch on cnr Av F Moraga Sur & 13a Calle Pte.

Parque Nacional Los Volcánes (Cerro Verde) Bus 248 (US$0.85, 1¾ hours, departs from La Vencedora bus terminal at 7:30am, 8:30am, 10:15am, 11:20am; 12:20am, 1:40pm, and 3:30pm, last bus returns at 5pm) Reconfirm departure times, as they may change once the park re-opens following the eruption in 2005.

San Cristóbal (Guatemalan border) Bus 236 (US$0.48, one hour, every 20 minutes from 5:30am to 9pm).

San Salvador Bus 201 (directo US$0.80, 1½ hours, every 19 minutes from 4:15am to 7pm; especial US$1.25, 11¼ hours, every 20 minutes from 4:20am to 6pm); all buses also stop at Metrocentro in San Salvador.

Sonsonate (via Los Naranjos) Bus 216 (weekday/weekend US$0.65/0.75, 1¼ hours, every 20 minutes from 4:30am to 6pm).

Sonsonate (via El Congo) Bus 209, (US$0.65, ordinario 1¾ hours, directo 1¼ hours, every 20 minutes from 5:10am to 5:30pm), departs from La Vencedora bus terminal.
