Juayúa History

History

Juayúa's happy vibe contrasts with the events of the not-so-distant past. It was here, as well as Salcoatitán and Izalco, that an ill-fated Communist/indigenous uprising was plotted and carried out. Government troops responded with bloody and indiscriminate zeal, killing tens of thousands of indigenous people in a matter of days. Generations of indigenous people subsequently eschewed trappings of their native culture, especially clothing and language, for fear of standing out. Juayúa has not retained or recovered its indigenous character to the degree other affected towns have, though a quiet pride still pervades.
