Antiguo Teatro Nacional
Just around the corner from the main plaza sits the Antiguo Teatro Nacional . Opened in 1909, this neoclassical building was converted into a movie theater during the silent-film era, and later functioned as the Telecom building and a public hospital. At the time of research it was undergoing a slow renovation - there were no stage lights and only plastic chairs - but music concerts and spoken-word performances are held often, and typically free of charge.

Teatro de Santa Ana
The Teatro de Santa Ana is an opulent renaissance-style building constructed using funds from an export tax on coffee beans. The epitome of wealth, excess and culture, it features stained-glass windows, marble staircases and immaculate detail. In 1933, it was converted into a movie house, and, after a hefty facelift, is now a theater again.

Teatro Nacional
The Teatro Nacional, east of the cathedral, was originally erected in 1917, but languished as a movie house for 50-odd years before being renovated in opulent style, with ornate gilt boxes and trimmings, lots of lush red velvet and a sensuous ceiling mural.
