I am thinking to spend a week in El Salvador while on my way into Nicaragua from Antigua. I am interested in Sant Ana, visiting the archeological site that is nearby and also then head to Playa Esteron...... I calculated this to be around 6 hours but I think I would have to change buses 3 times ... Sant Ana to the capital and then to San Miguel and then to Playa El Cuco and I m not sure if the in between time will be too long as I would like to do this in 1 day without having to spend time in…

In 2015 we decided to visit Liliana & Herbert, Salvadorian friends who after spending few years in France and England moved back to their beloved country, El Salvador.
The first thing I remember from this trip is the queue or lack of queue at the customs in the airport when we landed. I knew we were visiting a country where few tourists stop, so I was ready to queue and get asked a lot of questions before having a stamp on our passport.
Yet this was one of the fastest entry I have done in a…

San Salvador: Arrived very late and left the next morning; saw nothing other than from bus window.
Juayua: Chicken bus from San Salvador to Sonsonate and changed to another from Sonsonate to Juayua. Stayed 3 days and explored the town itself and nearby towns of Concepcion de Ataco and Ahuachapan, each a short bus ride away from Juayua. Hiked (more of a stroll than a hike) to the Laguna Verde and the waterfall, both easily done as DIY but strongly recommended not to go alone and to not take…

Hi all,

I have a friend traveling to El Salvador for 3 days, I am trying to help him. He will fly in early day 1, leaving about half a day to tour the capital San Salvador. He wanted advice on the following 2 days, before he had to fly out.

Can anyone recommend some top day trips, or even tour groups, hostels, etc.. that arrange some?

He was interested in visiting Cerro Verde, Volcan de Izalco, and Joya de Ceren in one day. Is this possible?

And then the second day... any tips?

What is the easiest way to go to El Tunco from Santa Ana? I've been doing chicken buses all along and don't mind them but if there is a especial for a long ride, that would be great.

Btw, this is a lovely country, the best part being the people - loving every minute of it. I have no idea why it wasn't on my radar before - I must be a complete idiot!

Summary:
In previous episodes, I and a young Canadian couple embarked on a Hotel Delfin-deranged private taxi from Monterrico Guatemala to El Tunco El Salvador. But at the border something went wrong: El Salvador officials would not permit the vehicle! Offered overpriced transportation in the back of a crummy old pickup truck, we chose to continue by chicken buses. One to Sonsonate, another to “Teotepeque”, places we knew nothing about on the advice of strangers.

Some history:
Teotepeque =…

Hello--traveling next week from lake Atitlan, Guatemala towarsd beach areas in El salvadore-perhaps el tunco. 3 questions-I'd appreciate some guidance on: (1) suggestion on best (ffast, cheap, safe, most direct) way to get from lake to el tunco area. (2) besides el tunco--would apprecaite suggestions on other beach towns. Ideal town: nearby historic sites for a day trip and something o do in the town besides JUST being on beach. Thank you,

I just bought tickets for El Salvador. March 10 - 18. Arrive/depart from SAL

Can you please suggest places to see/things to do in a week. A search yielded this trip report. All good but it is 5 years old. Has anything changed significantly since then? Any other suggestions? 2 days in each place is a good rule of thumb for me.

Thanks as always! Btw, all those tips re CR? Keeping them for a winter trip.
