Getting there & around

Buses to San Salvador (bus 125, US$0.90, two hours, every 10 minutes from 3:30am to 5:40pm) come and go from the corner of 3a Av Sur at 6a Calle Pte, across from the Despensa Familiar supermarket. For La Palma and El Poy, on the Honduran border, take bus 125 to El Amayo (the highway intersection) and transfer to bus 119.

Bus 542 goes to San Francisco Lempa (US$0.75, 45 minutes), where you can catch boats to Suchitoto, and continues to San Luís del Carmen (from Chaletenango US$0.85, one hour); it leaves at 10:15am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 3pm and 5:45pm from opposite Funerales La Nueva Protección - from the main drag, go two blocks east on 4a Calle Pte, turn left on Av Libertad and then turn right after a large hardware store. There's also one bus 125 from San Salvador that continues all the way to San Luís Carmen, passing the San Salvador stop at around 9:30am.

For Concepción Quetzaltepeque (US$0.35, 20 minutes, every 30 minutes from 6:30am to 5pm) take bus 300B from the 3a Av Sur bus terminal. For Dulce Nombre de María, take bus 125 to the turnoff, where you can pick up the 124 from San Salvador. From there, you can catch a pickup for the last 10km to El Manzano.

For La Montañona, the bus to Petapa (bus 295, 11:15am) and to El Carnizal (bus 542, 12:30pm) both pass the turnoff, and both leave from 3a Av Sur between 1a and 3a Calles Pte. Ask the driver to drop you at desvio a La Montañona (La Montañona turnoff; US$1, two hours); from there it's a 5km to 6km uphill climb to the village. The road is very steep - 4WDs with good traction should make it, but most ordinary cars cannot.

Bus 508 goes to Arcatao (US$1.15, two hours, hourly from 7am to 5:30pm) via San José Las Flores, leaving Chalate from a stop on Calle Morazán in front of Iglesia El Calvario, about 400m east (uphill) of the parque central. Arrive early to get a seat.
