Morazán has a reputation among Salvadorans as being a lawless frontier, the last redoubt of armed insurgents. In fact, it is one of the safest places to visit in the entire country, and certainly among the most interesting. The main risk you run here is getting lost on poorly marked trails - hiring a guide is recommended for that very reason, as well as being a way of supporting local tourism efforts.
