Lonely Planet review for Al Capone

Sure, it’s packed to the brim with tourists, but the impressive seafood offering, bridgeside location, and the occasional live music and belly dancing make the strangely named Al Capone an obligatory stop.

Avoid! Al Capone has gone downhill.

    dmkostial does not recommend this,

We have often visited Lonely Planet recommendations for restaurants during our travels, and we have rarely been disappointed. Al Capone's was a big disappointment though, and we would have to rate it as our worst restaurant experience in Egypt. There are plenty of other restaurants which have better seafood, service, and prices than Al Capone, and all on the sea as well.
When having a beer with our divemasters before going, they said that Al Capone was good a year ago, but has gone downhill since. We should have taken their advice. We were lured by the tout's promise (each restaurant has a tout in front to get you to come in) of fresh calamari which was not stringy or chewy--and our satisfaction guaranteed.
This was far from the case. The grilled calamari was not only tasteless, but some of the chewiest, stringiest calamari I've had in a while. I told the waiter after I was finally able to get his attention, and he said it needed to be cooked more. I tried again after recooking--still not good. I gave a piece to a different waiter, and he agreed it was chewy/stringy, and asked if I wanted to order something else. Shortly afterwards, the owner/manager came over with a piece of calamari in his hands, showing how soft it was as he plied it with his fingers and put in his mouth. I countered by picking up a piece of calamari from my plate and showing him I couldn't ply one flake off the calamari with my fingernail, and showed him how stringy it was when taking a bite. He then mocked me on how I was biting and tugging on the calamari. This guy is a major asshole is all I can say.
When we got our bill, they still charged for half of the calamari. I guess since I had eaten a few pieces in trying it before and after recooking it, and giving a piece to the waiter, and biting one in front of the owner?!? So much for the guarantee that if we don't like the food, we don't pay anything.
I would say that according to our visit and locals around Dahab, this place has gone downhill and is not going up anytime soon. Unless you are looking forward to having an argument with an asshole and being charged for crappy seafood, I would say avoid at all costs.
