  3. Day 11, Laid-Back Dahab After One of Us Almost Gets Left Behind

    Blog: Flying Coach - 15 September 2009

As the sun came up on Day 11 of our journey through Egypt, we were greeted with incredible views of the desert meeting the sea.  We were in the 15th hour of our 14 hour bus ride and it looked like we only had about three hours to go.  We finally pulled in to Sharm [...]

  4. Day 10 1/2, One of Us Stayed Awake on the 18-Hour Bus from Luxor to Dahab

    Blog: Flying Coach - 9 September 2009

Flip often makes statements such as “… one of us will have to stay home and take care of the baby”, or “one of us will have to go on site and take care of this server crash…”  And somehow, when he makes such statements, that unfortunate “one of us” always ends up to be [...]

  5. The Decision Not To Travel After 9/11

    Blog: GoBackpacking - 7 September 2009

The morning of September 11, 2001 is well-ingrained in my memory.  Within a few days of the attack, I called Adventure Center and verified my October trip was still scheduled, which meant I had to decide whether or not to head for The Middle East.  My parent’s definitely did not want me to go.  My [...]Your Free Subscriber Download

  6. Booking the Egypt Trip & Finding Airfare (2001)

    Blog: GoBackpacking - 6 September 2009

After I had enough money for the initial deposit, I called Adventure Center back. I spoke to the same woman as before, Maz. Since my trip is one of the least expensive, the $300 deposit was more than 3/4 of the total cost. I planned on paying the remaining $90 in another few weeks. I printed out copies of [...]Your Free Subscriber Download

  7. Researching the Egypt Trip & Operator (2001)

    Blog: GoBackpacking - 6 September 2009

By now I’m convinced I need to go visit Egypt, and soon! After reading the ad, I wanted to check and see if the tour operator, Adventure Center, had a web site. I went to http://www.adventurecenter.com and sure enough it was the tour operator’s site. I clicked on the About Us link first. I was excited to see they [...]Your Free Subscriber Downl

  8. My Egypt Trip (2001)

    Blog: GoBackpacking - 5 September 2009

Preface:  9 years ago, I was actively planning a trip to Egypt for the first time.  I started documenting the process on this site (long before this blog), however my plans would come up against the shocking events of 9/11.  This is a four part series, with the first three parts having been written in [...]Your Free Subscriber Download

  9. Luxor, Egypt

Blog: By Way of the World - 27 August 2009

We did a whirlwind tour of Luxor. We were flying from Luxor to Qatar, and then from Qatar to Nepal. The flight through Qatar was literally half the price of the other flights, but only occured three times per week. Anyway, the result was that we only had two full days in Luxor. To be honest, I can't imagine spending longer in that heat anyway! The heat was brutal (112 degrees and up) especially in the intense sun in the desert.

  10. Day 9, Luxor’s Valley of the Kings and Then Back Into Real Egypt

    Blog: Flying Coach - 23 August 2009

Our final morning on the ship began with another pre-6am wake up.  We were docked in Luxor and had toured the East Bank the previous day.  Today we were destined for the West Bank.  In ancient Egypt, the Egyptians buried their dead on the west side of the Nile, due to the setting sun which [...]

  11. Ahoy, Captain Felucca!

Blog: Passed Ports: images and anecdotes from our travels - 18 August 2009

August 13, 2009, Egypt **Photos to come, pending a decent internet connection without a line of people waiting to use it** We decided that the people sitting at the table near ours at lunch looked like “the felucca type.” As they were leaving I got up and chased after them to see if they would like to [...]

  12. Day 8, If You Can Only Go To One Place In All Of Egypt…

    Blog: Flying Coach - 14 August 2009

Our last full day on the ship promised to be memorable.  We were scheduled to see Edfu, travel north through a lock and end up in Luxor, where we would tour Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple.  It was going to be a busy day and we had to awaken at 5:30am in order to disembark [...]

  13. Apparently the Pyramids Aren’t the Only Ancient Thing Around Here

Blog: Passed Ports: images and anecdotes from our travels - 12 August 2009

I am moments away from bashing my head against the wall in frustration at the Egyptian computer situation. Every hostel claims to have internet, and the connections tend to be decent – though not great – judging by those using their own laptops. But the computers seem to be contemporaneous to the pyramids, making it [...]

Ahh, the lovely rest days in Luxor, cruising the Nile on a Felucca, seeing the Valley of the Kings and Queens, checking out Luxor Temple and eating a McFlurry in McDonalds as we update our blog on their free wireless internet.
