High Tea at the Old Cataract in Aswan
Blog: Sophie's World - 29 January 2012
From the Nile, the Old Cataract Hotel looks grand, perched on the granite bluff above. If you’ve seen Death on the Nile, it will also look familiar. My oldest daughter enjoys sipping tea in old world hotels, preferably while wearing a big hat, looking mysterious. Uniformed guards at the gate inform us we have to [...]High Tea at the Old Cataract in Aswan is a post from Sophie's World

6/20/10: Nile River, Egypt Ahhhhh… That’s the sound I make each time we come step foot onto our lovely boat. Here’s the first thing I do when we get back into our cabin: If you haven’t figured it out yet, we’re loving the cruise. Not only does it give us a chance to get out [...]

Heat: It’s Hot
Blog: No Hurry Curry - 29 June 2010
6/19/10: Nile River, Egypt I’ve never been hotter than I was today. I was taking a short nap on the top deck of our boat, and I woke up to find half of me had turned into a puddle that not even my beach towel could soak up. There was actually sweat accumulating on the [...]

Friday Flashback: Aswan, Abu Simbel & Feluccas
Blog: GoBackpacking - 18 June 2010
Even though I chose to take a barge-like cruise ship up the Nile River, I still had plenty of time to enjoy felucca rides around Aswan. As with everything in Egypt, the cost had to be negotiated, and it’s best to bring your sense of humor. Aswan, the Dams, and the Temple of Isis at [...]--------- Join Travel Blog Success today and learn to build a better travel blog. Cairo – Last Bits of Advice
Blog: An American in London - 22 April 2010
I have a dilemma. As dilemmas go, it’s not huge, but it’s my excuse for being a slacker on the blog front these last two weeks. I want to tell you about my week in Egypt over Easter, but every time I think about Egypt, I feel kind of sick. Maybe I’m allergic to Egypt [...]

PhotoFriday – Elephantine and Nubians
Blog: Sophie's World - 9 April 2010
By Aswan in the River Nile is Elephantine Island. It houses temple ruins (including the ruins of a step pyramid), two nilometers (structures measuring the water level during flooding season) and a luxury Mövenpick hotel. Most interestingly, though, Elephantine has a considerable Nubian population, living in three villages on the island. PhotoFriday – Elephantine and Nubians is a post from: Sophie's World

Things Remembered. Things Not.
Blog: Where the road goes - 31 December 2009
Watching Abu Simbel shining in the night sky and surrounded with the dark desert beyond, brought in on the cold winds that cut across the deck of our ferry, I said my silent goodbyes to Sudan. In truth, I had said farewell out loud, in person, the evening before. Standing in the dust beyond the [...]

The Decision Not To Travel After 9/11
Blog: GoBackpacking - 7 September 2009
The morning of September 11, 2001 is well-ingrained in my memory. Within a few days of the attack, I called Adventure Center and verified my October trip was still scheduled, which meant I had to decide whether or not to head for The Middle East. My parent’s definitely did not want me to go. My [...]Your Free Subscriber Download

Booking the Egypt Trip & Finding Airfare (2001)
Blog: GoBackpacking - 6 September 2009
After I had enough money for the initial deposit, I called Adventure Center back. I spoke to the same woman as before, Maz. Since my trip is one of the least expensive, the $300 deposit was more than 3/4 of the total cost. I planned on paying the remaining $90 in another few weeks. I printed out copies of [...]Your Free Subscriber Download

Researching the Egypt Trip & Operator (2001)
Blog: GoBackpacking - 6 September 2009
By now I’m convinced I need to go visit Egypt, and soon! After reading the ad, I wanted to check and see if the tour operator, Adventure Center, had a web site. I went to http://www.adventurecenter.com and sure enough it was the tour operator’s site. I clicked on the About Us link first. I was excited to see they [...]Your Free Subscriber Downl
