Lonely Planet review for Café Riche
This narrow restaurant was the favoured drinking spot of Cairo’s intelligentsia. It’s a bit less lively now, but nonetheless a reliable and nostalgic spot to enjoy a meal (even a European-style breakfast) and a glass of wine, surrounded by framed portraits of Cairo luminaries on the wood-panelled walls.

Rude, Rude, Rude
som_20079 does not recommend this,
This was probably my worst experience in Cairo. For one, this once intellectual hotspot, needs to hop off its high horse and realize that its only a reflection of its bygone glory. We walked in the restaurant at about 6pm and ordered 4 beers. Then the so-called "manager" came and said, "We manage a restaurant...so you need to order food". When we did order some side dishes it he said "...if it does get busy you need to leave". We just canceled the order and walked out. The food is not special...so there is no need to weather the 'snooty' staff at this establishment
Good for: Nothing, rudeness

Best Place for a Beer on Talaat Harb...
vasenka recommends this,
Cafe Riche is a well known part of the Talaat Harb scene...only a few steps off the Square (Midan) on the same side of the street as the Tulip Hotel which is only a few steps away... The cafe is frequented almost exclusively by Westerners...many order from the menu which is reasonably priced...but some just order beer or wine...the beers as expected are Saqqara or Stella...the menu mentions Luxor...but it is not in stock... The only Egyptians in Cafe Riche seem to be the so called "intelligentisa"...Many Well dressed Egyptian couples...seem to have a conversation with the doorman...and turn on their heels and leave...! Whats that all about...? Perhaps its the service of beer and wine...or perhaps its the 4LE "cover" that is put on every bill...? Service is fast and friendly by liveried Nubians...the atmosphere is casual...Cafe Riche is probably the most "western friendly" place to have a quick beer or lunch after a long day of sightseeing...in downtown Cairo. It is seldom crowded...because the patronage is almost exclusively Western/Tourists...even though the street outside is packed with Egyptian shoppers...who often ...sort of sneak a quick peek inside ...as they walk by..... Hmmmm....? I can recommend this cafe for the street weary Westerner...who just wants some relief from Cairo traffic and noise....
