Lonely Planet review for Simonds

The recent overhaul of this century-old French-style cafe has divided locals: some say that all the faded charm has been thoroughly sterilised, while others welcome the fresh coat of paint and bold new look. Whatever your opinion, at least the coffee is still good.

Incredible croissants + coffee in a cafe packed with locals

    ecwc_jenn recommends this,

We went here each morning where the friendly owner greeted us warmly and, by the 3rd day, barista mentioned in the description above knew our orders before we placed them, "one latte, one cappuccino". The croissants and cookies were gorgeous, crispy buttery pastries, and the pomegranate and orange juices were fresh. The atmosphere of the place was pleasant as well, tables and counters lined with Zamalek locals of all ages reading the paper and having cigarettes with their morning espressos.

The pay system may have changed since the official description written above, as we paid the lady at the cash register after finishing our breakfasts each morning and there was no problem with doing so.

    No smoking - yeah right

    humbucker recommends this,

Good espresso. The entire cafe seems happy to ignore the many non smoking signs with saucers overflowing with butts on every table.
