Getting there & around
Buses, taxis and mini-vans all leave from the tiny bus terminal (cnr Av Eterna Juventud & Jaramillo). Shared taxis depart frequently to Loja ($1.20, 45 minutes) after five people cram in; there are also buses ($1, 1½ hours) and Vilcabambaturis minibuses ($1, 1¼ hours).
Buses from Loja head south to Zumba ($6, six hours) and on to the Peruvian border.
Vilcabambaturis (at the bus terminal) also sells tickets for the Loja–Piura (Peru) bus ride, which goes via Macará. It doesn’t come through Vilcabamba, but it’s good to purchase your ticket a day in advance if you’re heading that way.
Transportes Mixtos is a cooperative of 15 taxi-trucks, which charge $1.50 to $4 for getting to nearby places (most within the $2 range); they hang out around the plaza.
