There are regular flights between Quito and Cuenca, and Quito and Loja. If you are coming from the north, Cuenca is six hours south of Riobamba by bus and the first logical stop. Loja is four hours further south and the best departure point for Peru, either via Macará or via Vilcabamba and the infrequently used crossing near Zumba. Guayaquil, on the southern coast, is only about 3½ hours by bus from Cuenca.
