Charter flights from the provincial airstrip in Shell charge around $100 per hour, but chances are if you’re headed into the deep green yonder, it will be on a tour.

The bus terminal is about 1km southwest of town. There are buses via Baños ($2, 1½ hours) to Ambato ($2.50, 2½ hours). Buses to Quito ($5, 5½ hours) leave about every hour and go either via Baños or Baeza. Buses to Tena ($2.50, three hours) also leave hourly. Flota Pelileo has one bus daily to Guayaquil ($9, eight hours).

Buses to Macas ($5, four hours) leave every hour and go as far as Río Pastaza, where you have to transfer. There are two early morning departures to Coca ($10, nine hours).

Centinela del Oriente, located at the bus terminal, runs ancient buses to various small villages in the surrounding jungle.
