For the benefit of everyone dropping by the Brazil branch for the first time, please read this FAQ first. And I hope there can be some sort of way to moderate the thread to keep it updated and clean. I know there are some AWESOME regular contributors here who enjoy giving advice; I feel this thread can really help to condense the information available.

I'll go first, with some general thoughts from the South America FAQ. Many thank to Apollo for starting that thread and for a great idea…

He!

For the first time i will travel through Colombia this august. I'll fly from Bogota to Pereira, then from Cali to Santa Marta and finally from Riohacha back to Bogota. I would like to know if it is highly recommended to take malaria pills (i got malarone pills from the pharmacist in the Netherlands) in Riohacha. I've bought DEET and an impregnated mosquito net. I hear a lot of nasty side effects of malaria pills, so if it's not necessary i don't want to take them (i will be staying there…

We are planning to rent a Hertz 4WD to drive the "Carretera Austral" southwards to O'Higgins, drop the car and cross the border via boat and foot to Chaltén in Argentina. To avoid the excessive one-way drop-off fees that Hertz imposes, we are looking for someone going in the other direction, northwards, who needs a car to pick up in O'Higgins (Robinson Crusoe Deep Patagonia Lodge) around 27-28 December 2016 and drop off in Balmaceda. Thank you!

Does anyone have any recommendations for books on Brazil? I’ve read a
few, like Michael Palin’s Brazil (ISBN 978-1780220864) and A Death in
Brazil (978-0747573166), and I recently stumbled across On the Amazon
(978-09556574145) and a nice short story called It’s Not My Canoe,
Amigo (by the same author, but a free download on Smashwords). I
enjoyed these, and also Ed Stafford’s Walking the Amazon (B0055CS5TQ).
Does anyone have any other favourites they would like to share?

Thanks!

I will be going in December and tickets are not available yet? I want a sleeper seat. Anyone know cost? When online tickets become available? How the trip is?
