Getting around
Walking is the easiest and most convenient way of getting around downtown. An above ground metro rail route was under construction at the time of research that will cross the city north to south on Avenida Rocafuerte.

Car & motorcycle
Car
There are several car-rental agencies at the airport including Hertz (229 3011; www.hertz.com) and Localiza (228 1463; www.localiza.com.ec), although both are expensive; make sure insurance, tax and mileage are included in your rate.
Bus & tram
To/from the bus terminal
Buses from the center to the bus terminal leave from Parque Victoria, near 10 de Agosto and Moncayo.
Several buses leave from the terminal for downtown including the No 71. A taxi to or from downtown is about $3.
Bus
City buses are cheap (about $0.20) but the routes are complicated and are not much use for getting around downtown. What with waiting and traffic, you’re better off walking.
Local transport
Taxi
Always agree on the fare before you get into the cab, otherwise you will surely be overcharged. You should be able to get between any two points downtown for about $1.50 and to the airport, the bus terminal or Urdesa for between $3 to $4.
There are air-conditioned minicabs called ‘Taxi Amigos’ that respond quickly once called and charge even slightly less than yellow cabs. VIPCAR (239 3000) is one.
