Esmeraldas Getting there & around

Getting around

The airport is 25km from town, across the Río Esmeraldas. Passengers and taxi drivers gather in front of the TAME office in town a couple of hours before the flight, and four or five passengers cram a taxi for $3 per person (15 minutes). Incoming passengers get together to do the same thing at the airport. At the airport, a taxi charges about $25 to go directly to Atacames, thus avoiding Esmeraldas completely.

A taxi to the beach costs $1, or otherwise take a Selectivo bus signed ‘Las Palmas No 1’ northbound along Bolívar.

Taxis charge a $1 minimum, which doubles after 11pm.

To avoid the area of the bus terminals you can catch buses to Atacames on Calle Olmedo after Calle Quito.
